Water heaters are supposed to be quiet. When yours starts popping, rumbling or banging, it's telling you something — and in Michigan's hard-water areas, the message is usually sediment. Here's a sound-by-sound guide from our water heater plumbers.
This is the classic sound of sediment. Minerals settle at the bottom of the tank; water trapped under the layer boils and bubbles up through it. It makes the heater work harder, overheats the tank bottom and shortens its life. A professional flush fixes it if caught early. If the sediment has hardened into a thick crust, the tank may be near the end — see water heater repair vs. replacement.
Water dripping onto a hot burner or element. It could be condensation on a new or heavily used heater (harmless) or a leak from a fitting or the tank itself. Check for moisture around the base — a leaking water heater needs attention right away.
Usually a partially closed inlet valve or a restricted T&P relief valve forcing water through a narrow opening. Open the valve fully or have the relief valve replaced.
This is often water hammer in the pipes, not the heater — pipes jolting when a fast-closing valve stops flow. Water hammer arrestors fix it. If the bang is inside the tank, it's severe sediment.
Pipes expanding and contracting as they heat and cool. Normal, though pipe straps or insulation can quiet it.
If the noise comes with lukewarm water or hot water that runs out fast, sediment is likely displacing water volume and insulating the burner. Call for same-day service.
A tankless unit that clicks, hums or rumbles usually needs descaling — annual maintenance in hard-water areas. We service all brands; see tankless water heaters.
